| Description: | This was a funny story: My friend, Anita, and I went to North Dakota to do birds. We were driving (actually I was driving - I never let her drive even though we generally took her car) along and I could see something in the distance along the road. I pulled up beside "whatever it was" and said, "Look at that over there!" "Where?" Anita asked. "Over there!" I pointed. She couldn't see it. So, we got out our cameras with telephoto lenses (they make GREAT binoculars) and I could see this Killdeer with THREE babies. At first there were two and then there were three. In and out and out and in they ran. She stood there frozen - almost like she was frightened and didn't know what to do because she could see us looking at her. But she stood there - as still as a mouse - and the kids kept popping in and out from under her belly. Finally, after some time, she said, "the heck with it" and flew off leaving the kids behind. They, of course, ran off into the marsh in the background. It was great! A Killdeer with 6 legs!!! (And if you look closely, you'll see the bellies of the two babies which looks like two breasts!) |
